HandiNet Golf Club Products and Services

What is HandiNet

HandiNet is Handicomp's golf handicapping network, which includes computer software products & services, data processing services, Internet services, system support services, and all other products & services that have to do with Golf Handicapping and Tournament Management.

Each Golfer on the HandiNet handicap network is assigned a 7-digit golfer number uniquely identified throughout the network, and which allows access to specific handicap information on the Internet. Scores are collected at Golf Clubs on computers, on paper posting sheets, or via the Internet; should the Golf Club allow it. Home scores and away scores are routed electronically to the HandiNet central computer where new USGA Handicap Indexes® are calculated per the Authorized Golf Association's revision schedule. Reports may be printed and distributed by Handicomp or by Golf Clubs with printers attached to their computers. New USGA Handicap Indexes are then issued by Golf Clubs and can be verified by Golfers at the Golf Club or via the Internet.

The appropriate association revision schedule is automatically coded into the Golf Club computer to assure compliance with the USGA Handicap System and the computations always adhere to the latest USGA handicapping formula. Software updates for Golf Clubs are provided as part of the offering and can be downloaded electronically via modem or the Internet. The HandiNet network for Golf Clubs and Internet component for Golfers are on line and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

HandiNet is comprehensive in that it includes a complete Tournament Management software system and interfaces to many other Handicomp software modules.

USGA Handicap System

Section 1-1 of the USGA Handicap System manual states, "A USGA Handicap Index, issued by a golf club or authorized golf association, indicates a golfer's skill and comes in the form of a number taken to one decimal place, e.g. 9.2. A USGA Handicap Index is issued only to individuals who are members of a golf club."

This means that individual golfers cannot assign themselves a USGA Handicap Index, as they must belong to a Golf Club as defined by the USGA. It also means that Golf Clubs can assign USGA Handicap Indexes to member golfers without having to belong to a state, district, or regional amateur golf association. Following are some notable quotes from the USGA:

"We have always believed that the club structure is the backbone of the Handicap System. We are moving in the direction to strengthen that club structure." "Golf clubs can and will operate on their own and issue Handicap Indexes to their members."
    - Jim Dodd, USGA Handicap Department (5/16/2001)

"While golf associations have the potential to be licensed to issue Handicap Indexes, the ultimate issuance is through the association's member clubs."
    - Kevin O'Connor, USGA Senior Director, Handicapping, GHIN & Information Services (1/24/2002)

"…the American way is to give freedom of choice and our Handicap System allows that."
    - Jim Dodd, USGA Handicap Department (5/23/2001)
